AUSTIN, Texas, March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR)—the Society of Interventional Radiology’s peer-reviewed scientific journal—presented the 2018 JVIR Editor’s Best awards during the March 26 general session of the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, March 23–28 in Austin, Texas. The annual awards, supported by SIR Foundation, were decided after a comprehensive review of all papers submitted to JVIR during the prior year.
2018 JVIR EDITOR’S AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CLINICAL STUDY
Jeffrey H. Hull, M.D., of the Richmond Vascular Center in Richmond, Virginia, was honored with the award for outstanding clinical research paper for “The Pivotal Multicenter Trial of Ultrasound-guided Percutaneous Arteriovenous Fistula Creation for Hemodialysis Access.”
In citing why this paper stood out, JVIR Editor-in-chief Ziv J Haskal, M.D., FSIR, noted, “The U.S. and worldwide population of patients with end-stage renal disease continues to grow. Functioning sustainable native fistula access remains a primary goal. This pivotal trial demonstrated safety and efficacy of the second endovascular method for creating durable fistulae in patients by purely catheter-based means.”
“These approaches may bring new, non-surgical access options to far larger patient populations,” Haskal added.
2018 JVIR EDITOR’S AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING LABORATORY INVESTIGATION
Tao Pan, Ph.D., of Zhongda Hospital in Nanjing City, China, was honored with the award for outstanding laboratory investigation for “Effects of Multi-electrode Renal Denervation on Insulin Sensitivity and Glucose Metabolism in a Canine Model of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.”
“This carefully controlled experiment demonstrated the ability to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in Type 2 diabetic canines using renal denervation,” Haskal said.
Noting the importance of this research, Haskal added, “Reducing sympathetic nerve activity from this multi-electrode approach further adds to the exciting research suggesting that diabetes may be mitigated and sugar metabolism improved in a reproducible fashion by controlling nervous system signaling.”
Haskal, a professor with the department of radiology and medical imaging at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, also recognized the authors of an additional 10 clinical and five laboratory papers for their contributions.
